Scuba diving has been around for awhile, and though it is usually considered a recreational sport with a variety of public and private adventurous connotations, it also has very practical commercial and military uses. But did you know that regular participation in diving can have huge health benefits? For example, here are the top 10 fitness and health perks that are noted in Samir Becic’s recent book titled Resync Your Life: 1. Physical fitness: Swimming, and by association scuba diving, is one...

My wife and I visit our children and grandchildren that live along the Atlantic edge of Florida about three times a year, and I often try to get in a bit of ocean diving while there. Living in Virginia and a considerable distance from the coast forces me to spend a lot of time quarry diving, so it’s always a real delight to catch a Florida charter and check out the salt life! On December 24th of this year (2019) I booked a 2-tank drift dive on the Republic IV, one of several boats owned and char...
Needed: a new quarry diving MODEL
            Airworks - 8/16/2019 8:17 AM
Having dove in numerous quarries since the late-60’s, I have substantial experience in this type of dive environment. It appears to me that the primary reason for the decade-long decline in local diving is the general unattractive and ho-hum nature of the quarry/lake diving ambience. The history of scuba diving in quarries shows that their primary use by dive shop owners, dive instructors, and quarry site managers has been overwhelmingly oriented around training and certifying divers on the tech...

            Airworks - 7/31/2019 3:45 AM
The subject of inland/local diving continues to be a subject of intense discussion within the dive industry. The noticeable decade-long decline in local diver participation has created concern in the minds of many dive industry leaders. In fact, one well-known dive instructor in the mid-Atlantic area made the comment that the dive industry is actually DYING! Many problems have been presented and debated, but very few and practical solutions have been forthcoming. DEMA’s "Go Dive Now" program is ...

While driving from Virginia to North Carolina’s coast for a chartered dive to explore the famous U-352 submarine, my buddies and I decided to take turns reading (out loud for the benefit of the rest) Wallace J. Nichols’ recent book titled “Blue Mind.” We found it to be a very enlightening exposition of why humans are irresistibly drawn to water. “Blue Mind” is a compelling and profound look at how water affects us on every level of human existence: psychological, emotional, physical, and behavio...

            Airworks - 7/27/2019 6:45 PM
From the days of Jacques Ives Cousteau and the birth of SCUBA, recreational divers have been instructed to always dive in teams of two or more “buddies.” All diving-related activities – equipment checks, descents, ascents, etc., are all to be performed in groups. The “buddy system”, as it is known, is intended to provide safety, fun, and socialization. When the system functions as intended, with two or more competent divers joining forces underwater, the diving experience can be all it’s meant t...

An unfortunate fact that we’ve known for so long is that our oceans are struggling. Worldwide fish stocks are dwindling in numbers; microplastics are found in shellfish, there’s a Great Pacific Garbage Patch three times the size of France, and the rising seawater temperatures are disturbing major aquatic systems. Changes to the environment are also changing our waters, and these changes aren’t at all good. In an attempt to hold people accountable for the trash they produce, a social media campai...

On a recent forensic dive in the Jordan river near Salt Lake City I lost a couple pieces of equipment (My fins specifically) because I failed to understand conditions and plan accordingly. The dive was to look for a firearm used in a recent shooting. We were given the conditions of the water and possible depths of the river (from knee deep to holes as deep as 15’) Being the first one in the water I discovered that using fins was going to be pointless. The deepest point in our search area was onl...

Our sport and love of the oceans has given us so much pleasure we owe it to the environment to return the favor. Due to intentional abuse of the oceans and reefs, naturally occurring weather fluctuations and diseases the reefs have suffered varying degree of damage. Reefs, to some degree, can restore themselves if the damage is not to severe. But unfortunately now in many cases it is. With our ability to destroy we have the ability help restore. This is exactly what the Coral Restoration Foundat...
